Description taken from Linear issue.
We need to have a good open source free project management tool in order to allow community members to collaborate with us on e.g. research.
Collaborating with the community in Linear is not possible as Linear is paid and it would be very costly giving individual members access. Linear will stay our main tool for internal collaboration given it's great functionality and partially proprietary topics but occasionally there could be some specialized issues at which community input is needed and having the ability to structure work especially on the research topic together with the community can increase engagement.
A commonly used tool is Phabricator. Here is an example how a workflow looks there.
The tool is no longer maintained though and there is a successor called Phorge which might offer similar functionalities. I am not sure though how difficult it is to install and maintain forge.
Therefore I'd like to develop an overview over all free open source tools in an article.
Options of getting final results that we want
- Searching for a project management tool like Linear, but that's totally free and easily scaleable to support a big community, where we can give custom permissions to users
- Creating a new Linear workspace. where we could invite all community members (maybe via link) and making them guests instead of members. May not be a good idea because of free plan limitations
- Using Lindie or other apps which we could integrate with Linear. Lindie may not fit our needs if it lacks certain features we need.
Criteria
- Open and free.
- Probably has to be a Linear integration, as that's probably the only way for it to be able to pull data from our Linear workspace
- Fast to access. We can link workflows directly from the wiki or forum
- Suitable for investment research.
- As many similar functionalities as Linear e.g. linking different tasks together
- Everyone even community members can participate
- Integration with other tools?
- Mobile App?
- Overall Rating/Impression
