Description

Description taken from Linear issue.

We need to have a good open source free project management tool in order to allow community members to collaborate with us on e.g. research.

Collaborating with the community in Linear is not possible as Linear is paid and it would be very costly giving individual members access. Linear will stay our main tool for internal collaboration given it's great functionality and partially proprietary topics but occasionally there could be some specialized issues at which community input is needed and having the ability to structure work especially on the research topic together with the community can increase engagement.

A commonly used tool is Phabricator. Here is an example how a workflow looks there.

The tool is no longer maintained though and there is a successor called Phorge which might offer similar functionalities. I am not sure though how difficult it is to install and maintain forge.

Therefore I'd like to develop an overview over all free open source tools in an article.

Options of getting final results that we want

  1. Searching for a project management tool like Linear, but that's totally free and easily scaleable to support a big community, where we can give custom permissions to users
  2. Creating a new Linear workspace. where we could invite all community members (maybe via link) and making them guests instead of members. May not be a good idea because of free plan limitations
  3. Using Lindie or other apps which we could integrate with Linear. Lindie may not fit our needs if it lacks certain features we need.

Criteria

  • Open and free.
  • Probably has to be a Linear integration, as that's probably the only way for it to be able to pull data from our Linear workspace
  • Fast to access. We can link workflows directly from the wiki or forum
  • Suitable for investment research.
  • As many similar functionalities as Linear e.g. linking different tasks together
  • Everyone even community members can participate
  • Integration with other tools?
  • Mobile App?
  • Overall Rating/Impression
  • Existing Explanatory Videos

Coda Yes, but in the future. Link to document Youtube Importing comments is on their roadmap, but not available yet. X (editors are free. Only Doc makers pay) 1 doc creator account with linear integration costs 30$/month. Integrates a lot of apps into one doc. Interesting for OKRs, Meetings, Project Managment etc. X (can share as view-only, or as commenters or editors, requiring their log in). X (editors are free) X (lots of packs - integrations) X X (dedicated app which resembles the desktop one great) X Very active and supportive community (Link) ? -- (cannot export as a document) Provides a great number of templates that pull all sorts of data from Linear, such as team members informations. (Link) $240 million in 4 rounds.

(Link) raised $80 million in most recent round.

Yes
Lindie Yes Link Youtube Downside is that comments are only synced from when you created the Lindie project and added the Linear issues into it. X ($30/month) X X X ? X X X ? (small but friendly team) ? Comments from Linear appear in Lindie, but only sync from when they've been linked to the Lindie project. ? Yes, here.

And also, Link to their Roadmap

Kualitee No Pulls all data we need from Linear. Link Youtube

Great video

Imports comments and everything, but ricing makes it very unscaleable. Design is also bad. -- ($9/month for normal users and $7/viewer per month, was offered a discount so that makes it $4/viewer/month) - -- (only with subscription) -- (only with subscription) X ~ (no dedicated app) ~ (link) X X (very fast to reply and very helpful) ? -- ? All comments will be imported from Linear, showing the person who commented, but without their picture. -- (didn't find anything) -- ?
Plain Booking demo Cannot test as you need to set-up company email for support - clients. But looking at their Linear integration it offers good information such as Team, Asignee, Priority Would be cool to be able to try it out, but it seems more like a customer service app. Raised $6 million in funding. Link
SyncLinear If we can use it only starting with new issues in Linear. Link Syncing doesn't work well with existing issues, only with newly created ones. Link X (free) Only got a short answer, but since asking for more information to solve my problem, haven't gotten a response in 2 weeks. Looking at theiir integration page it says that comments are also synced.
Ducalis NO Loom Youtube Doesn't import any comments, but it's on their roadmap. Have to pay for every editor. In Coda free users can vote, edit, etc. X (Link) We can probably make due with the free plan. Anyway, prices vary between $2-$5/user/month. Can be shared to anyone via link (view only) Can invite via email as Members (can edit issues, evaluate them) (Link) X ~ (no native app, but works good on mobile if you enable desktop view) X X X (very fast to reply and very helpful) ? -- (cannot export as a document) Imports profile pictures. This is their roadmap (link). Only pay for visitors, which have view-only rights. -- (no info) Yes
