December 2023

December 6, 2023: Meta launches an AI-image generator called Imagine with Meta that enables users to create high-resolution images from text prompts. The company is also launching a watermarking feature for AI-generated features to ensure transparency and traceability of the images[1].

November 2023

November 16, 2023: Meta Platforms launches two new AI tools for generating and editing videos that can be posted on Facebook and Instagram. Emu Video generates a four-second long video with a prompt of a caption, image or photo, combined with a description. Meanwhile, Emu Edit enables a user to easily edit videos using text prompts. The new tools are advancements of the EMU chatbot launched at this year’s Meta Connect[2].

September 2023

September 27, 2023: At the Meta Connect 2023, Meta also announced AI chatbots such as the EMU, Meta AI and AI Studio. EMU chatbot generates images within 5 seconds while Meta AI is an assistant that helps you answer basic questions. Meta AI, built on Llama 2, gives you access to real-time information and will be integrated into Meta Platforms messaging apps. AI Studio will enable users to build their own custom AI bots that have profiles on Facebook and Instagram and can eventually be added to Metaverse as avatars. Zuckerberg gave examples of AI chatbots built using profiles of celebrities such as Snoop Dog. Zuckerberg also said that it will introduce Sandbox next year for people who don't code to enable them to train AI.[3]

September 11, 2023: Meta Platforms is building an AI chatbot that will be as powerful as OpenAI’s GPT-4, that's according to the Wall Street Journal. The company plans to begin training it in early 2024. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also wants it to be free for companies to create their AI tools. According to the Wall Street Journal, Meta is building up its infrastructure by buying more Nvidia H100 AI-training chips in an effort to be free from Microsoft’s Azure cloud as it trains the new AI model[4].

August 2023

August 24, 2023: Meta introduces an AI model that will assist in writing computer code. The model known as Code Llama will use text prompts to generate codes. It can also be used to debug and complete written codes. Code Llama is built using Llama 2 language model. The model will be available in different configurations and will support languages such as Python, Java and C++. However, the model is not recommended for general text tasks. Meta said that their test on Code Llama found that it's on par with ChatGPT and better than other open-sourced LLMs including Llama 2. Like its other LLMs, Code Llama is free for research and commercial use[5].

August 22, 2023: Meta releases SeamlessM4T AI model that enables translation between speech and text for up to 100 languages. It also enables speech-to-speech translation for up to 35 languages. The company will make the model available for the public for non-commercial purposes. Meta said the training data for the model came from 4 million hours of "raw audio originating from a publicly available repository of crawled web data." The datasets came from Wikipedia and similar websites[6]. Over time, Meta plans to integrate these AI advances into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Mesenger, and Threads[7].

August 7, 2023: UBS predicts that Meta will release a new consumer chatbot powered by generative AI in its connect event in September. It told its clients that the chatbot will likely be available in WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. UBS projects that chatbot could add more than $20 billion to Meta's revenue. In a call with analysts last week, CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to provide more details about the Chatbot at its Connect. He pointed out that Meta is currently developing a customer service AI bot along with an internal AI tool aimed at boosting profitability. He also indicated that AI investments is seen driving up operating costs next year[8].

August 3, 2023: Meta launches AudioCraft, an open-source AI tool that enables users to generate audio and music from text prompts. AudioCraft will have three models namely; MusicGen, AudioGen and EnCodec. Meta said that the three models will be available to researchers and practicioners who will be able to use their own data set to train them. MusicGen was trained using Meta's own and licenced music. On the other hand, AudioGen was trained using public sound effects. EnCodec enables high quality music generation with less artifacts. Meta also released AudioGen model, which are pre-trained and enables users to generate environmental sounds and sound effects such as a dog barking or cars honking. "While we’ve seen a lot of excitement around generative AI for images, video, and text, audio has seemed to lag a bit behind," Meta said in a blog post[9].

August 1, 2023: Financial Times has reported that Meta Platforms plans to launch a series of AI chatbots that exhibit different personalities by September. The move is aimed at boosting engagements in its social media platforms. It is alledged tha Meta is exploring coming up with chatbots that speak like Abraham Linkon. It also plans to create chatbots that advises on travel options in the style of a surfer. Meta declined to comment on the Financial Times report[10].
