Goal of the study....
According to Upwork, top rated freelancers alone represent 10% of freelancers in the platform. Given that Upwork claims to have over 12 million freelancers that would be around [[Upwork: Seniority Level of Freelancers|1.2 million]] freelancers. However, the searchable number of high quality freelancers is what matters the most as these are the most active freelancers in the platform. (When does a Freelancers become non searchable?)
Therefore, we decided to find out the number of these searchable freelancers. Our objective was also to understand where these high quality freelancers are coming from. If they are not concentrated in U.S only, that will be an advantage to the platform during macro weakness as clients can shift hiring to less developed countries where wages is low.

For the purpose of this analysis we defined "high quality" freelancers as those freelancers who have an established track record with rising talent, top rated and top rated plus badges<ref>https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050417233-Top-Rated-Plus https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211068468-Top-Rated https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211063228-Rising-Talent</ref>. In order to reach those badges freelancers needs to achieve the following criteria according to upwork:
* Rising talent. As a rising talent you need to 1) Complete projects on time and as promised to client 2) Regularly submit proposals to projects that match your skill set 3) Demonstrate various activity metrics. A good profile and background is advantageous. <ref>https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211063228-Rising-Talent</ref>
* Top rated: As top rated you need in addition 1) A job success score of over 90% 2) Maintained Rising Talent status or a Job Success Score of at least 90% for at least 13 of the last 16 weeks 3) 12-month earnings of at least $1,000 <ref>https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211068468-Top-Rated</ref>
* Top rated plus: As top rated plus in addition you need to 1) have total earnings over $10,000 in the past 12 months <ref>https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050417233-Top-Rated-Plus</ref>

* For the purpose of this analysis we defined "high quality established" freelancers as those freelancers who have an established track record with rising talent, top rated and top rated plus badet<ref>https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050417233-Top-Rated-Plus https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211068468-Top-Rated https://support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/211063228-Rising-Talent</ref>. We chose that definition, because from the experience of freelancers we know, that it can be hard to get a job without these badges as it is harder for a client to assess the skill level of a new freelancer on Upwork. A portion of new freelancers on Upwork will reach the "high quality established" criteria over time.
We chose that definition, because from the experience of freelancers we know, that it can be hard to get a job without these badges as it is harder for a client to assess the skill level of a new freelancer on Upwork. It is important to note that a portion of new freelancers on Upwork will reach the "high quality" criteria over time. In addition that definition does not capture all "high quality" freelancers as some good people do not optimize their profiles for Upwork badges.

* Upwork defines top rates

As such freelancers who are starting in the platform tend to charge a low fee or even accept unpaid tasks(tests) from clients in order to get started. According to Upwork, top rated freelancers alone represent 10% of the top freelancers in the platform. That would be around [[Upwork: Seniority Level of Freelancers|1,200,000]].
