General Improvements

User:Aron What do you think about having the dates at the beginning of the news description like i did it for the 2 january examples? I think the links should be placed as references in order to make the article more lucid. Did you start your study of how other Wikipedia articles/News present their timelines? Note: This study could be conducted in an Wiki Article.) --PirateCaptain (talk) 15:14, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

user:PirateCaptain I think it's cool as the first thing anyone will do is check the date of the article. I haven't study how other articles present their timelines yet. I will look at it tomorrow

That way of linking is also great, just like what we have been doing in other articles( It also make the articles tidy)--Aron (talk) 15:31, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

News Assessment: Meta €390m fine, Jan 4

Discussion 1

@Aron Why do you judge that those news have an positive impact on Meta? https://www.investmentwiki.org/wiki/Meta_Platform_News#Meta_fined_.E2.82.AC390m_by_Irelands_Data_Protection_Commission.2C_SI.3D1.25.2C_I.3D7.2C_Jan_4:~:text=Ireland%E2%80%99s%20Data%20Protection,online%2Dactivity%2D11672844441 --PirateCaptain (talk) 20:00, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

user:PirateCaptain Meta said it will appeal the decision and litigation could take years, giving it time to plan the next course of action. Also, Meta has said that today's decion doesn't prevent them from using personalized ads: “These decisions do not prevent targeted or personalized advertising on our platform. The decisions relate only to which legal basis Meta uses when offering certain advertising,” Meta said in an emailed statement: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-04/meta-fined-390-million-ordered-to-change-way-it-processes-ads

User:Aron Ok thanks for the additional colour. I think you could include assessments like that to the News as it is insightful. Just make sure to mark them as assessment. Also make sure to sign your msg by using the signing symbol (which is the symbol right to the "B" and "I" at the top. Only if you signed your msg and tagged me, i will get a notification. --PirateCaptain (talk) 12:44, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

Discussion 2

user:PirateCaptain Analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said the ruling could be a “major gut punch” that puts 7% of Meta’s total ad revenue at risk (that was $115 billion in 2021.)

Meta has three months to change how it asks its users to agree to personalized ads without breaking EU's antiprivacy rules. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/meta-will-decidehow-painful-its-irish-gut-punch-is/2023/01/06/2a39383c-8d88-11ed-b86a-2e3a77336b8e_story.html --AK 19:23, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Discussion 1:

user:Aron Good catch. That's bad news overall. I hoped they will begin to scale down a bit.

Andrew Brosworth just became CTO in 2022 and lead the VR/AR efforts before. I'd much rather have their old, 13 year serving CTO with his focus on AI. (1) To me Brosworth seems too enthusiastic and reminds me on Tareq Amin of Rakuten who pushed his CEO to built the first Open Ran Network in Japan. (Which is facing large problems and huge losses)

I also think the overall tone of the article is too positiv and i don't like parts like:

Over time it’s clear that mixed reality will help VR devices become increasingly compelling alternatives to laptops and desktop computers, placing virtual screens and interfaces on your desk or in your hands. It won’t be long before a VR headset is capable of emulating a powerful home computer setup, from a device that fits in a backpack and can be used anywhere. The journey toward that type of device took a big step forward with Quest Pro this year.

Here is a video of someone testing the Quest Pro for work (2) who draws the conclusion that it is not yet feasible due to issues like keyboardlocation, resolution and eye strain (Min 8:30).

can you try to find out if Meta has any plans or solution to ease eye strain over time? That was the number one issue LA and i encountered when being in VR longer than 30mins. (1)https://techcrunch.com/2021/09/22/facebooks-cto-to-step-down-after-13-years-at-the-company/

Bill against TikTok introduced SI=1-2%, I=9, Dec 13

Article https://www.investmentwiki.org/wiki/Meta_Platform_News#SI.3D-.281-2.25.29.2C_I.3D8.2C_December_19:~:text=SI%3D1%2D2%25%2C%20I%3D9%2C%20December%2013%5B,Press%2DReleases%26id%3DD1C2E147%2D3A23%2D4F49%2DAC27%2D268572AABDCD

Discussion 1: user:Aron Nice. Please investigate a bit more. Is this of any relevance or will it likely fail or don't have any material impact? --user:PirateCaptain

Discussion 2:

I think it is relevant and can easily be passed given that:

1. It's a bipartisan bill.

2. It's not the first bill targeting TikTok to be passed in US senate. In 2020 the "no TikTok on Government Devices Act" was passed.

https://www.reuters.com/article/usa-tiktok-senate-idINKCN2522OV

3 a). During recent weeks, Several states, most Republican-led eg Alabama, Utah, Texas, Maryland and South Dakota have banned TikTok on state devices. This will likely embolden the senators to pass the bill.

3b). Republicans will take control of the House in January, and the bill could be a sign of tough scrutiny they plan to apply to Chinese companies.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/us-tiktok-legislation-1.6684090

4. FBI Director Christopher Wray is concerned about the security risks that TikTok poses.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-13/tiktok-security-deal-in-cfius-panel-is-clouded-by-fbi-s-doubts-state-bans --user:Aron

Discussion 3: user:Aron: Cool thanks. Any insights on the bill itself? Is there a way in general to have a guessing/tracking on any particular bill how it is doing? (Like websites specialized on tracking how it is doing, credible people giving their opinion on it, public statements on support etc.) --user:PirateCaptain

Discussion 4:user:Aron The congress website has a tracker eg this link tracks "STOP CCP ACT" introduced on September: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/6686/text?r=48&s=1 It also has an alert.

Senate Intelligence Chairman Mark Warner(who is a democrat) said Congress and states may take further steps soon to limit TikTok because of security concerns if the Biden administration doesn’t quickly come forward with a solution to protect American users of the Chinese-owned social media network (from min 2:20): https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2022-12-15/senator-warner-on-crypto-regulation-tiktok-concerns

Sen. Dick Durbin, Democrat senate majority whip, encourages Americans to remove TikTok from their devices(min 1:01-2:03): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIHgqG5Ja9Y

Bank of America analyst said:

"A TikTok ban is possible but not most likely scenario. A negotiated sale to a US tech or media company could be more likely if a ban was on the horizon, and a sale could accelerate advertiser interest. In a ban scenario, we would view Snap as the biggest sentiment beneficiary, followed by Meta."

Cowen analyst said:

“We continue to believe TikTok will survive in the US. But we think it’s now a very close call, and we maintain our 40% chance of a ban in 2023.”

Zuckeberg optimistic about Meterverse on a longer-term horizon SI=1%, I=8, Nov 30

Article:https://www.investmentwiki.org/wiki/Meta_Platform_News#:~:text=edit%20source%5D-,Zuckeberg%20optimistic%20about%20Meterverse%20on%20a%20longer%2Dterm%20horizon%2C%20SI%3D1,SI%253D1%2525%252C%2520I%253D8%252C%2520November%252030%2C%2D%255Bedit%2520source,-WhatsApp%20and%20Messenger

Discussion 1: user:Aron The data on RealityLabs spending in this article is very interesting and maybe the first time those numbers have been shared. Apparently half of the budget is spent on AR, 40% on VR and 10% on Social Plattform like Horizon.

Edit: The AR spending part is surprising to me and good news as it means their spending on VR is more efficient than previously thought and their AR product might be better than thought (Given them the benefit of the doubt that they can create something valuable with that money)

"Within Reality Labs, the unit was spending over half of its budget on augmented reality (AR), with smart glasses products continuing to emerge “over the next few years” and some “truly great” AR glasses later in the decade, Zuckerberg said.

“This is in some ways is the most challenging work … but I also think it’s the most valuable potential part of the work over time,” he said. Virtual reality accounted for more than 40 per cent of Reality Labs’ spending, while futuristic social platforms like the virtual environment it calls Horizon received only about 10 per cent."

Discussion 2 user:Aron Adding to this: Zuckerbergs appear tiered and says he is also spending personally the largest part of the time on the legacy social media suite + metric internally are going well and engagement is strong: https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1598076937880195083?s=20&t=agmfyJSMJvE53NJ97sxOVg I strongly suppose there that there is no full recording of the conversation out there (yet) but could you still try for around 10 minutes to find something

Discussion 3 user:PirateCaptain Here is the full Interview:

-we are in a zone where operating with more efficiency and discipline is going to be more critical(min 4:11)

-80% of investments go to core business/family of apps-facebook, messenger, whatsapp, ads related to that, around 20% go to reality labs(from min 5:36)

-Within reality laps, Meta spends a small part of investment in social platform, 40% in VR(which is at the same level of what microsoft spent when building xbox), about half or more goes to normal looking glasses( from min 6:56)

-How Meta deals with doubters on Metaverse(Min 8:32)

-Engagement in family of apps is strong, but hard to track how they are doing compared to competitors like TikTok. However, external data suggest that Reels is about half the time of TikTok globally, outside of China, compared to where it was a year ago, the trends have been good( min 13:21)

-Whatsapp is largely untapped in terms of monetizing it yet 2 billion people are using it everyday. That's next platform they will monetize and potential is going to be pretty big over the next few years( min 15:07)

-Apple has singled itself as the only company that's trying to control unilaterally what apps get on the devices and that's not sustainable or good(min 15:41)

- Social media is a very competitive space (gives TikTok as an example of new entrants that are successful)-min 18:23

-On company policies(min 20:25)

-On regulations eg there take on Deep fake ( min 22:07)

-Hard to judge TikTok's security issue, but he thinks that it poses security issues( 23:42) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wk5WPONF7c

Discussion 4 user:Aron Good find and well summarized. Watched the whole video as I was interested in the mood of it. Think Zuckerberg was as sharp as always. In particular I liked e.g. the focus on operational performance and the acknowledgment for the need of innovation in SocMed to stay ahead of the game
