July 2023
- Industry-wide revenue passenger-kilometers (RPKs) increased 26.2% year-on-year (YoY) in July, reaching 95.6% of the traffic numbers seen in 2019. [5]
- Available seat-kilometers (ASKs) also saw a strong growth of 23.7% YoY, totaling 96.1% of the pre-pandemic capacity.
- Domestic passenger traffic reached an all-time high and rose 8.3% over 2019 levels, mainly driven by the surge in PR China, where domestic RPKs grew by 22.5% relative to 2019 figures.
- The recovery of international traffic remained stable in July, with industry-wide international RPKs standing at 11.3% below pre-covid levels.

May 2023
The annual growth in industry-wide revenue passenger-kilometers (RPKs) was 39.1% in May. While this expansion was 6.7 percentage points (ppts) slower than the previous month, growth in global traffic continues to signal a resilient recovery momentum.[7][8]
“We saw more good news in May. Planes were full, with the average load factors reaching 81.8%. Domestic markets reported growth on pre-pandemic levels. And, heading into the busy Northern summer travel season, international demand reached 90.8% of pre-pandemic levels,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.
- Seasonally adjusted RPKs rose by 2.8% month-on-month, maintaining the increasing traffic trend established in previous months (Chart 1).
- At 81.8%, May marked the first month that the global passenger load factor was fully restored to 2019 levels. Moreover, the available seat capacity recovered to 96.1% of pre-crisis levels, a 3.6 ppts climb compared to April and the highest recovery level achieved so far.
- The highest load factor was recorded by North American carriers at 86.3% in May. European and Latin American airlines followed, with 84.8% and 81.1% load factors, respectively (Chart 2).

April 2023
Total traffic in April 2023 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) rose 45.8% compared to April 2022. Globally, traffic is now at 90.5% of pre-Covid levels. At 81.3%, industry load factor was only 1.8 percentage points below pre-pandemic level.[9]
“April continued the strong traffic trend we saw in the 2023 first quarter. The easing of inflation and rising consumer confidence in most OECD countries combined with declining jet fuel prices, suggests sustained strong air travel demand and moderating cost pressures,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.
- Industry-wide revenue passenger-kilometers (RPKs) increased 45.8% year-on-year (YoY) in April. While this growth rate was lower compared to the first quarter, it still indicated a positive trend.
- Adjusted for seasonality, RPKs rose by 0.9% in April over the previous month. The slowdown in month-on-month growth aligns with the lower annual growth rate, which can be attributed to the industry's progress towards reaching 2019 levels while building upon the higher base established in 2022

Passenger traffic across the European airport network increased by +9% in H1 compared to the same period last year, with the pace of growth in Q2 (+8%) remaining very dynamic – although easing somewhat compared to Q1 (+10.2%). International traffic kept being the main growth driver in H1 (+10.3%), expanding at more than twice the rate of domestic traffic (+4.2%).
This brought H1 passenger volumes at +0.4% above H1 2019 levels – finally confirming a full recovery from the Covid-19[11]
World Tourism Organization
September 2024
An estimated 790 million international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) were recorded in the first seven months of 2024, about 11% more than in 2023, though 4% less than in 2019. Results were driven by strong demand across most regions, the ongoing recovery of Asia Pacific destinations, increased air connectivity and visa facilitation[12]
Tourism direct GDP also recovered pre-pandemic levels in 2023, reaching an estimated USD 3.4 trillion, equivalent to 3% of global GDP.
The UN Tourism Confidence Index shows positive expectations for the last part of the year, at 120 points for September-December 2024, though below the prospects for May-August, which stood at 130 (on a scale of 0 to 200, where 100 reflects equal expected performance)
Q1 2024
An estimated 285 million tourists travelled internationally in the first three months of 2024, about 19% more than in the same period of 2023. These results were boosted by continued strong demand, the opening of Asian markets, as well as by enhanced air connectivity and visa facilitation.
International tourism receipts hit USD 1.5 trillion in 2023, virtually recovering pre-pandemic levels (-3% versus 2019) and bringing total export revenues from tourism, including both receipts and passenger transport, to USD 1.7 trillion in 2023, about 96% of prepandemic levels in real terms (i.e. excluding inflation). Tourism direct GDP recovered pre-pandemic levels in 2023, reaching an estimated USD 3.3 trillion, equivalent to 3% of global GDP.[13]

Forecast
- International tourism is expected to recover pre-pandemic levels in 2024, with initial estimates pointing to 2% growth above 2019 levels.
- This projection is subject to several factors including the pace of recovery of Asia and the Pacific, economic circumstances such as inflation and its effect on transport and accommodations costs, as well as the evolution of geopolitical tensions and conflicts.
- The latest UNWTO Panel of Experts survey shows that 67% of tourism professionals expect better performance in 2024 than in 2023, while 28% expect similar performance and 6% suggest it could be worse.
- The UNWTO Tourism Confidence Index indicates slightly weaker prospects for January-April 2024 (score of 122) than for September-December 2023 (score of 126)
September 2023
- An estimated 700 million tourists travelled internationally between January and July 2023, about 43% more than in the same months of 2022, though 16% fewer than in 2019. Europe welcomed 375 million of those travellers, 54% of the world total.
- After reaching 80% in Q1 2023, international tourist arrivals hit 85% of pre-pandemic levels in Q2 2023 and 90% in July 2023, backed by continued pent-up demand.
- By regions, the Middle East saw the best results in January-July 2023, with arrivals exceeding by 20% pre-pandemic levels. Europe, the world’s largest destination region, reached 91% of pre-pandemic levels, supported by robust intra-regional demand.
- Both international air capacity and passenger demand recovered about 84% of pre-pandemic levels through June 2023 (IATA). Hotel bookings doubled in January-August 2023 compared to the same period last year (Sojern). Global occupancy rates in accommodation establishments reached 70% in August, slightly above the 66% rate in August 2022 (based on STR data).
- The challenging economic environment could weigh on spending patterns over the remainder of the year, with tourists increasingly seeking value for money, travelling closer to home and making shorter trips.

Forecast
- Some 58% of UNWTO Panel experts believe international tourism will not return to 2019 levels this year, of which 37% point to 2024 and 21% to 2025 or later. Yet, this share has decreased slightly compared to the May survey (61%) showing that a larger number of destinations has achieved pre-pandemic levels (27% compared to 11% in May).
- International tourism is expected to continue to recover through December 2023 driven by remaining pent-up demand and increased air connectivity, though at a more moderate pace following the summer peak travel season.
- Results show international tourism remains well on track to reach 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023 as projected by UNWTO in the January 2023 World Tourism Barometer.
May 2023

- International tourism grew 86% in Q1 2023 compared to the same period last year, showing continued strength at the start of the year.
- International tourist arrivals reached 80% of prepandemic levels in the first quarter of 2023 (-20% compared to the same quarter of 2019) boosted by strong results in Europe and the Middle East, compared to a 66% recovery level for the year 2022 overall.
- International tourism receipts recovered the USD 1 trillion mark in 2022, growing 50% in real terms compared to 2021, and reaching 64% of prepandemic levels
